The weekend of November 12 saw the canoe race for the title of SA K3 Champion on the Vaal River. The paddlers were fantastically competitive and there was not a dull moment for the competitors or spectators!

Day one started off at the Dam Wall on the Saturday and finished at Three Rivers Waterfront, a hardy 36km of water to paddle. The field was spread out, yet there was an element of good sportsmanship as the rivals went on head-to-head.

The finish of day one only seemed to encourage the paddlers as they started off on day two.

Cote de Vaal hosted the start and made sure the seconds had enough coffee for the long day ahead. The finish was at Smiling Thru, giving the paddlers 34 kilometers of rapids to navigate.

The title went to local Watuni paddlers, Kobus Filmalter, Caroline Filmalter and Andrè Zandbergh, who finished both days in a time of 05:32 minutes. They are also the first mixed team to hold the title of South African K3 Champions. They were followed closely by Gerrie Moolman (ACD), Willi Endres (PRE), and Jonathan Jooste (ACD) who took second in 05:34.

Centurion Paddlers Richard Fly and Pierre van der Merwe were the first K2 to finish in a time of 5:21. Kelvin Byres and Mark Gordon from DABS were the second K2 in 5:24.

The K1’s are not to be underestimated, and Richard Cele (VIC) finished first in a time of 5:46. Joe Penn (DAB) took second in a time of 6:26.

The race, hosted by Johannesburg Canoe Club, was a huge success. The water levels were great, and the paddlers thoroughly enjoyed the challenge; as well as the gifts sponsored by ABB, Diesel Electric, Schneider Electric and ARB Electrical. The paddlers look forward to the next race on the December 10 on the Klip River, hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club.
